The cutest ghost couple photobombing everyone’s seasonal photos ^///////^

Based on the Yu Yu Hakusho manga-only story “First year’s Christmas”. I love these two together, they’re adorable. Also I know she meets a guy in heaven but if you think about it she’s a person who literally would wait for someone forever so boohoohoo sob… they’re so cute

I hope you all have a safe, warm, and very lovely holiday with the people you love most!

EDIT: This post has been edited like a bajillion times to fix weird compression issues in the first image and also I’ve discovered I can’t type and words were randomly missing in the sentences above lol…

Thank you guys so much for all the reblogs and love for these two! I noticed in tags a few people with questions about her story and her name, so:

1) Her story

The manga-only story “First year’s Christmas” is volume 1, chapter 5, and there’s a scanslation here: http://mangafox.me/manga/yu_yu_hakusho/v01/c005/1.html

It’s a super sweet story that, like a lot of the manga-only chapters, were cut out because they were extraneous to getting to the action of the rest of the series. However, it’s one of the ones where Yusuke is more involved, and it gives you another perspective on his character very early on.

Spoiler summary: Yusuke, still a ghost, is floating round the city with Botan during the Christmas season. They find a ghost who has been sitting at a bench since her death, and it’s implied she has already turned away a handful of other guides who’ve attempted to coax her to leave and go to the Reikai. Basically, her boyfriend was always late for their meetings, and she would always wait for him. She got sick and died before she was able to see him for another meeting last Christmas.

By chance, her living boyfriend actually appears to meet another girl there. From their conversation, it turns out he was an asshole who was just playing around with her, and had made a bet with his friends that she would even wait for five hours. That was the day she died, so he lost the bet. He didn’t bother following up to find out what happened to her at all.

After they leave, she slowly begins to cry, saying, “if I weren’t sick that day, I probably would have waited five hours…” Yusuke gets super pissed off, and is like, “LISTEN TO ME, FORGET THIS PIECE OF SHIT! WE’RE GONNA HAVE THE TIME OF OUR unLIVES!!” and drags her off on basically the cutest ghost date/party ever. They watch a movie in the theatre, hang out at a theme park, hitch rides on other people’s cars (there’s a super cute drawing of her holding onto Yusuke, who has his cat face, on top of a car and the driver is like ? presumably because his car is behaving erratically), stand at the top of Christmas trees to see the holiday decorations… He also tells her that her expression when she smiles is really cute and makes goofy faces so that she’ll laugh more. She says her boyfriend never said/did anything like that.

At the end of their date they float above the city to see the beautiful night lights, and he tells her to give her boyfriend a good telling-off. And she yells “THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!! GOODBYE!!!” and he’s like “WHAT THE HELL, why are you thanking that jerk?” and she says, “Because without him, I wouldn’t have met you…” BOOHOOHOO

Botan gets ready to take her to the Reikai. Yusuke gives her advice (like an old man lol) to tell her to not be fooled by bad guys and to be a smart girl, and Botan is all lmao… Before she leaves, the Christmas ghost tells him, crying happy tears as she’s ferried away, “Thank you for everything… if I find a good man in the afterlife, you’ll be the first person I tell! Please wait for my news!” (SOMEONE WRITE THIS FIC!!!)

And then, after she’s gone, Yusuke pranks the boyfriend and scares the hell out of him. Hahaha

Her name is never given in this story.

2) Her name (and what happens to her)

In volume 8, there’s an insert in between the Dr. Ichigaki fight chapters of the Dark Tournament, that reveals her sitting next to a shy-looking guy in heaven. He’s like “Oh, the weather’s so nice today!” and she says “Yeah!” and then they are both too shy to say anything until he says “Oh, the weather’s really too nice!” and she says, “Yeah!”

Here’s the page: http://mangafox.me/manga/yu_yu_hakusho/v08/c001/21.html which sadly doesn’t have this conversation translated and wipes the original text as well. In the Taiwanese version of the manga I have, he says her name, which is given as 加奈 (which could just be replicating the sound of her name as opposed to any actual kanji).

I don’t have the original Japanese or the English books, so if you do, please take a look and let me know what’s given there!

Just reblogging because I realized the other day I DO have a copy of the page in Japanese, from the Reikaishinshiroku:

And thanks also to @korolevskiy-sekret for confirming the English! ^^

A few hairstyles of Urameshi Yusuke! aka more brush pen practice

One of the (many) things I always liked about YYH, especially in the manga, was how much some of the characters played with their own appearances in terms of their hairstyles. Yusuke and Keiko, for instance, both had quite a few different ones. That little detail made them feel that much more real.

Usual (series default / most recognizable)

It’s a dumb long-running joke I have that you can tell how determined/ambitious someone is by whether they draw Yusuke with his hair up or down (and whether or not Kuwabara appears lol). When I was a kid, his default slicked back hairstyle was one of the most difficult things in the world to draw and I could never get it right. What finally worked for me when I started drawing him again recently was to just make it as messy as possible lol

Hair down (fan favourite)

Unsurprisingly, his “down” hairstyle is extremely popular. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen comments where people are all “WHY DOESN’T HE LEAVE HIS HAIR LIKE THIS, HE LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER WHY” (answer: because it doesn’t cultivate the badass super delinquent image he’s worked so hard to establish, obviously). But hilariously enough I’m finding it harder to draw for some reason now??? It’s like it is deceptively easier to get the general look down, but harder to I DON’T KNOW I think it’s the long bangs and the fact that it’s pretty symmetrical that makes it more challenging. At least it is a pretty distinct design compared to other characters with short dark hair and bangs.

Vol 17 (“Decisions” chapter)

The hairstyle he sports when he proposes to Keiko is slightly different from his default and has a really cool wave when you look at it in profile from his left. It looks more mature and sophisticated! They tried to do it in the anime as well; it isn’t quite as obvious there. Of course, I can’t draw it as well as Togashi :[

Vol 19 (series end)

Finally, Yusuke’s “bed head” hairstyle (I believe the first appearance of the version I’ve drawn here is when Keiko is updating him on the shenanigans from the fake ghost case while he’s still in bed, and you see it again in the final chapter where Genkai’s will is unveiled - it’s like he ran out of hairgel or got lazy or has been rolling around or his hair is wilting lol). This is probably the hardest one for me to draw now. I’ve seen some doujinshi artists do takes on it too with varying levels of success (sometimes it just ends up not looking like him at all). Damn Togashi, effortlessly messy is not so effortless D:

… Did I basically just write an essay about Yusuke’s hair hahahah
